This article offers the first edition of a late Hellenistic papyrus fragment from Egypt that preserves information on classical and possibly also post-classical Greek literature as well as on Greek history of the second half of the fifth and the beginning of the fourth centuries B. C. The authors discuss the various potential interpretations of the highly fragmentary text, including the exciting possibility that it offers new information on Aristophanes' lost Daitales.

The present study identifies and comments on passages from late antique private and business papyrus letters (4th-7th c. AD), which contain advice concerning model behaviour in life. Our material derives from a body of ca. 4,000 papyri and ostraca, selection being helped by the use of the electronic database Heidelberger Gesamtverzeichnis der griechischen Papyrusurkunden Ägyptens. The material under discussion offers important information about the worldview and mentalities of late antiquity, as well as the ways letter writers of this era employed in order to strengthen the argumentative basis of their requests. Our study reaches new conclusions, on the one hand, with regard to the particular content of the advice concerning the adoption of model behaviour and attitudes, and, on the other, about the contexts in which such advice is found, its interaction with gnomic statements, its chronological distribution, rhetorical function and grammatical expression.
